Experienced Lawyer in Aiken
Gary Smith was born in 1961 and raised in Greenwood, South Carolina. He graduated from the Citadel in 1983 with a B.S. degree in business administration and served five years in the United States Air Force, where he achieved the rank of captain. After completing his military service, he enrolled in the University of South Carolina School of Law and earned his Juris Doctor degree in 1991.
Gary was admitted to the South Carolina Bar in 1991; the U.S. District Court, District of South Carolina, in 1992; and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in 1995.
Gary has served as Aiken’s city attorney since 1995 and has also served as the city attorney for New Ellenton. He is past president of the Aiken County Bar Association and past president of the South Carolina Municipal Attorney’s Association. He is the past chairman of the South Carolina Supreme Court Commission on Continuing Legal Education and Specialization and serves on the South Carolina Supreme Court Commission on Lawyer Conduct. He is also the past chairman of the South Carolina Bar Family Law Section Council.
He is a trustee on the Board of Trustees for Gardner-Webb University in North Carolina. He has served on the Aiken County Commission on Higher Education and the board of directors of the University of South Carolina Aiken.
A former deacon and a current elder at First Presbyterian Church, Gary has served as president of the Aiken Sertoma Club, chairman of the Aiken County Red Cross Board of Directors, president and board member of the Aiken High School All Sports Booster Club, and as a member of the board of governors of the Palmetto Golf Club.
Gary is married to the former Stephanie Young of Conway and they have two children – Hudson and Tyler Marie.
